What to see in August

August sees wildlife on the move, with birds and even whales in the early stages of migration

You might be surprised to read that the North Sea is one of the best places to go whale watching in the UK. Of course there is no guarantee that you will see these magnificent creatures, but August and September are the best months to head out on a whale watching boat trip to look for minke sei, fin and even humpback whales. Try the Whitby Whale Watching Centre or Yorkshire Coast Nature for boat trips.

Staying out to sea, August, September and October can be a great time to see migrating skuas and shearwaters alongside gannets, terns, auks and gulls. RSPB run boat trips which include chumming – throwing a mix of fish bits – which offers brilliant opportunities to photograph these hard to see birds.

National Marine Week (run over a fortnight to account for the difference in tide times around the UK’s coastline) is in August for a good reason – this is a great time of year to explore the wildlife living in rockpools at places like Filey Brigg and YWT Flamborough Cliffs. The YWT Living Seas Centre runs events to mark this national week included guided rockpooling trips.

With hope of clear summer skies, this is a great time to visit YWT Spurn for a safari style tour and to climb the Spurn Lighthouse for panoramic views.
August is a time of passage for many birds and wading birds are certainly on the move!

In the north of the county Flamborough’s Thornwick Pools and YWT Filey Dams regularly attract waders such as little ringed plover, common and green sandpipers, greenshank and snipe.

YWT Spurn and YWT Kilnsea Wetlands are fabulous places to watch waders especially on a falling or rising tide.
